adhesive web affects steal in weird way

It thinks I'm trying to let go of the key and adhesive web is preventing that, but I'm actually trying to steal it. If the TARGET of the steal command were webbed, then it might make sense for the item to be steal-proof since it's stuck to the person carrying it. But...that's not me.
