Cabal items and familiars

Should it be acceptable for conjurer's to pawn off the cabal item to their familiar so that the conjurer in question who is raiding is, in a way, free from the drawbacks of having a cabal item? The cabal item was taken, and in an attempt to counter-raid before the conjurer could walk back to the cabal, he gave the item to the familiar, he recalled, then obviously walked the familiar back.
