Step out echo doesn't jive with successful waylay

For example: Devlon the human is resting here. A cityguard is strolling through here, keeping the peace. You step out of the shadows. You stop trying to waylay your prey. You trample around loudly again. You back Devlon into a corner and distract him from what he was doing! If I stopped trying to waylay my prey, then how was I able to back him into a corner (waylay)? I'm thinking that on a successful waylay, the "You stop trying to waylay your prey." shouldn't even display, right?
