The handful of times I tried this today, a successful broken wrist always prevented wielding a staff or polearm.

Maybe he was enlarged, and the wield code for "giant-sized" (as opposed to "actual" giants) incorrectly ignores weapon type when determining whether a two-handed weapon can be wielded in a single hand.
