mass metabolic slowing wierdness?

The only way I could figure to stop attacking myself was to drop link, or cast word. I understand after having done this that it is meant as an offensive spell but this seemed a bit ridiculous. Also is there a reason it is only offensive, slowing a ranking group during rest periods seems very common and would seem like a perfect place for this spell to be used in a non-offensive manner.
