The bug is the echo itself, not the fact that I got it:
"You don't have for to barter for practice"
Seems like it should be:
"You don't have {ITEM} to barter for practice"

You got the echo because you didn't format the command correctly.
practice 'enhanced damage' for gem
You did
practice enhanced damage for gem, which them tries to practice a skill called enhanced using an item called for.
practice = the skill is ignored and should be "for" = the item
