outfit command for warriors

I'm playing a warrior who chose spear as his starting weapon. After doing the newbie gear quest, I outfitted and gained my improved practice weapon. later, I died, and lost my new practice weapon. I then used the outfit command again figuring that a regular newbie quality weapon would at least be better than no weapon, but this time I ended up with a SWORD instead of a spear. I don't know if this same thing would have happened if I had done it before the quest, but it happened consistantly afterwards.
